Making Connections: John Bevan Ford
Maori Artist
By
Jill and Peter Smith
Making Connections is intended for readers of all ages. It is designed for all who wish to know more about the remarkable renaissance in Maori art, as well as those with a special interest in art. We hope that it will be of particular appeal to students in schools and other educational institutions. For this reason the questions guiding our writing have concerned where John finds his sources and ideas, and how he brings those ideas to fruition in the form of carvings and paintings. This book is as much about who John is and how he works as about his finished art works. Jill and Peter Smith
Jill Smith (MMEd, DipFA, DipTchg) is a senior lecturer in art and art history at Auckland College of Education with responsibility for training secondary school teachers. A graduate of Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, she has more recently pursued her interest in art education, completing an MMEd from the University of South Australia. Her particular interests include contemporary Maori art, and bicultural and multicultural art education. Jill plays a major role nationally in curriculum development, assessment and moderation, and has a passion for New Zealand art. With her husband Peter, she has assembled a significant collection of contemporary art and jewellery.
Peter Smith, OBE (BA, DipTchg) is an exhibiting artist, educational consultant and writer. After his retirement from a principalship at Auckland College of Education in 1990, he continued his involvement in the arts and education, as a member of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, as a consultant to report on support services for New Zealand Museums, and for the Ministry of Education and New Zealand Qualifications Authority. He has been a radio and television critic and presenter, fronting the first Arts Review programme on television. Much of his writing is in the field of education; as a keen yachtsman he also wrote the much-praised Rebecca: The Restoration of an Old Yacht. In 1986 he was awarded an OBE for services to art and education.
