"Fiord"
For the first three months of 2002 I was invited as the inaugral artist-in-residence at Punatapu Lodge in Queenstown, New Zealand. During my stay at the Lodge, in the evenings over dinner I had conversations with the never ending cycle of new guests. I heard of their homelands and experiences about Queenstown. The "Sounds" as we call them or Southern Fiords were a recurrent and enthusiastically related these and eventually at the end of my stay I went with the Farry family on just such a trip both in the Fiords and in the open sea. I arrived home with many images shot during the trip and germinating ideas for a new series of paintings based on this experience. I was not able to begin the new works as soon as I had hoped as I became seriously ill. I am happily well along the road to recovery and have, over the past few weeks, been able to start work again. I have decided to have the first public showing of this new series as an on-line only exhibition. Wheras the mountain series I worked on at Punatpu were underlinned by the great geophysical movements that created them this present "Fiord" series is dominated by the light and the mists that so often enshrouded the mighty Fiords.
