While still working on the Te Aitanga a Kiwa Series with its references to the artists and energies of the Pacific Rim I was invited to work in a building opposite the Munich Town Hall. During this period of time images of the Marianplatz (town square) crept into the work. I then crossed to Oregon, USA where I worked in my friend Rick Bartow’s studio. I started there the day the first swallows arrived. The swallows and images of Marianplatz intertwined with the Pacific images. Whilst the background strands of patterning created a kaupapa to embrace the varied images I felt the Maori perspective needed strengthening and did so by using a taniko to underpin or provide an edge for each work. This, in my opinion, also created tension within the work and reminded me of the way my mind was stimulated by the crossing of borders. Hence........ Taniko-Border.
